We are often confused by the iconography and offerings during the Fall season. Around this time in October, icons lend to haunt us, we are sometimes taunted by negative vibes that may not have their best interest in the health of our spirit. When we chose to live as peaceful beings we look less and less to these cultural icons as entertainment. But how do we navigate the scary monsters, super freaks, and then the never-ending pumpkin offerings? The pumpkin is its own icon, and we find it everywhere, in coffee drinks, pancakes, on tee shirts, logos, windows, lawn decorations, television. How does one navigate a season of fright without mixing traditions? When I was a little girl and loved Halloween, yet was truly unclear where the root of my obsession stemmed. Playing with Ouija boards, dressing up as a monster, catching thrillers on TV, reading Tales from the crypt, or Stephen King. All of it contributed to my unhappiness, and lead to fear and eventually, I experienced terror in my dreams. The dark followed me into my adult life as well, it manifested negatively, it showed up in obscure events and then as I tried to find ways to manage the fears, the fire with fire approach was unrealistic and became scary too!
I had enough of living in a fear-based way because it was stealing the life I wanted. I became faith-based. I decided to create a new way to experience life by redefining my life and the October season. Each and every morning I recite a prayer, that was given to me through Freedom in Christ ministries. The prayer grounds me, I feel safe, then restful, and reading it aloud gives me the confidence to live a joyful, happy life as I know; who I am in Christ. The morning prayer ritual absolutely defines and filtered out all the damage I had done as a youngster. We mustn’t deny in fact; entertainment type activities designed to frighten and scare are effective in opening doorways to forces that are beyond our control. Once you address this you will be ready to close that door.
Here are some easy ways to navigate the October season and its icons. Only take part in fun, light-hearted activities that bring joy. I recently posted a DIY live video on my Facebook Page on how to cover a pumpkin with gold and silver metal leaf. I’ve done this with my children since they were little. I place the finished pumpkins in front of my icons with candles. Enjoy a good movie! Careful not to be passive and watch something that will penetrate the psyche in dark ways. Repenting is a good cleansing process, you may begin with; I Corinthians 5:1-13. To manage your emotions; read scripture readings from the Bible or a daily reading from a book such as; The Daily Discipler by Neil T. Anderson, the readings will ground you in Christ. Avoid angry people, they can easily move you to a place of uncertainty and chaos. Gather a true sense of worth by reciting a prayer, or chant in your head words such as; I am a branch of the true vine. Carry prayer beads in your pocket or purse and reach for them in time of fear to remind yourself that you are safe and are Gods child.
You can redefine the season and find joy!
