Miracle-working icons said to be a mystery to the faith. We often ask why? And How? What classifies a miracle-working icon? Icons are part of church tradition, they have adorned church walls for centuries, and are used during the liturgy. Masses of prayers recited in front of icons, they are often kissed in adoration, blessed with holy water, placed before the altar, given in celebration as gifts and honored through out the church’s calendar. Iconographers who paint icons prepare, fast and pray as they paint the language of the holy realm. Receivers of the image given to them by God they are open vessels. Icons unable to work a miracle would not make sense as they are a window to heaven, a vortex, and holy light bounces from God through them in all directions. They are the most charged element in the church after the Eucharist.
Peopleand watching the images of God as clear examples of miracles. Icons show us the way to salvation. People will search for the roots of the Savior in an icon. Why the mystery behind the miracle? We are unbelievers if we reject the icons healing possibilities. The mystery revealed to us when Christ resurrected. Jesus was crucified, died and was buried and on the third day, he was resurrected. He tore down the doors of hell and stomped on death than eternal life granted.
In John 23-24 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified”. “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds”. We listened and have become witness to the many seeds produced by the death of Christ. Jesus words tell us how the miracle works, its possibilities, and the classifications. Therefore icons we pray before, become vehicles that disperse His light. Remembering Jesus words, with faith, while facing the icon, the face of our Lord is before us, and the icon charged with hope, growth, and healing.
Today, when we see an icon weep it is full, flooded, and overflowing, with the fuel of God’s light because of the trust, belief, and love transmitted to and from, it shares elements of love as if it is heavens channel and miracles occur, but only because of the combination Our God has opened. We have seen and experienced miracles with icons, they are charged by our prayers, honor, hopes, promises, good intentions, and faith.
